Letters are disappearing
from signs, landmarks and company logos as part of a global initiative to
encourage people to donate blood.
During National Blood
Week 2015 British organization NHS Blood and Transplant launched the 'Missing
Type' campaign to encourage those who have never donated blood before to
sign up as donors.
The campaign aimed to
reverse a trend in the decline of new blood donors over the last decade and
contribute to the 204,000 people we need to attend a donation session for the
first time to give blood in 2015 to replace people who can’t donate anymore, to
make sure we have the right mix of blood groups.
The missing letters- A,
B and O highlight the main blood types in danger of going missing due to low
blood donation levels.
In Australia, one blood
donation is needed every 24 seconds and around 100,000 new donors are needed in
the next year alone, according to the Australian Red Cross who have joined the
international drive.
Many organisations,
including Coca Cola, Qantas and Byron Bay Cookie Company, have dropped the letters
from their name, joining other big global brands and famous landmarks in
helping to spread awareness.
